Battery Replaces Hawaii’s Last Coal Plant

Hawaii has introduced a groundbreaking solution to maintain grid reliability as it transitions from coal to renewable energy. The Kapolei Energy Storage system, developed by Plus Power, is a massive battery comprising 158 Tesla Megapacks. With 185 megawatts of instantaneous discharge capacity, the battery reacts swiftly with a 250-millisecond response time.

It replaces the functions of an old coal plant, offering instantaneous power delivery and grid services. The Kapolei project’s innovative features include synthetic inertia and fast frequency response, making it a crucial element in Hawaii’s journey to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2045.
