David Mittelman, PhD of Othram

An exclusive Tech Tribune Q&A with David Mittelman, PhD, the founder and CEO of Othram, which was honored in our:
Tell us the origin story of Othram – what problem were you trying to solve and why?

There are hundreds of thousands of cold cases and unidentified remains that cannot be resolved using conventional forensic DNA testing methods. Othram develops DNA sequencing and genomics technologies to advance biometrics and human identification. The company helps law enforcement identify victims, find missing persons, and reveal perpetrators of crimes.

What was the biggest hurdle you encountered in your journey?

The Othram team has vertically integrated a forensic DNA test method leveraging this new technology. The first challenge was to build the only laboratory in the United States that currently offers this process completely in-house. The second challenge is to work with the forensic community to ensure usability and validation of these methods.

What does the future hold for Othram?

Othram will help clear unsolved cases that remain open due to limitations in current forensic DNA testing.

What are your thoughts on the local tech startup scene in The Woodlands?

Texas is a growing hub for technology and entrepreneurship. The Woodlands is a great environment for startups, especially biotech startups. There is lots of tech talent, close proximity to the largest medical center in the world, and the cost of living is very attractive.

What’s your best advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?

Find something to work on that inspires or motivates you, but also will create a substantial impact.
