Siri: Next-Gen Version with Generative AI Expected in iOS 18

Apple is reportedly working on a next-generation version of Siri powered by a generative AI chatbot, anticipated to be unveiled with iOS 18 at this year’s WWDC. Apple’s Large Language Model (LLM) system, known as AppleGPT, is said to be behind this development, although it is currently used internally. The company aims to surpass existing generative AI systems, like ChatGPT, by focusing on on-device processing and expanding beyond language processing to include AI for audio and video.

On-device processing offers speed and privacy advantages, but it poses challenges for mobile devices’ limited memory. Apple is expected to make a significant AI-related announcement, possibly featuring a more powerful Siri, at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June. Analysts note Apple’s focus on AI in job postings and suggest that iOS 18 may enhance generative AI capabilities.
