Battery Maker Makes Major Breakthrough, Challenges Tesla

CATL, the world’s largest battery manufacturer, has announced the development of a new “condensed” battery with an energy density of 500 Wh/kg, which will go into mass production this year. The new battery, which is almost double the energy intensity of Tesla’s 4680 cells, integrates a range of innovative technologies, including ultra-high energy density cathode materials, innovative anode materials, separators, and manufacturing processes, offering excellent charge and discharge performance as well as good safety performance.

The announcement is significant as the new battery will go into mass production this year, unlike many other high-density battery breakthroughs which are still in their infancy.
