Japan Explores New Solar Power Equal to 20 Nuclear Reactors

Japan aims to generate 20 gigawatts of electricity, equivalent to 20 nuclear reactors, using perovskite solar cells by fiscal 2040. These next-generation solar cells, identified as key to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, will be highlighted in Japan’s revised energy plan. Leveraging its strong iodine production, Japan plans to establish a secure and independent supply chain for these cells, enhancing economic security.

Perovskite solar cells, lightweight and flexible, can be installed on walls, windows, and vehicles, addressing space constraints that limit conventional solar panel expansion. Despite potential, challenges like durability, cost reduction, and a short lifespan delay large-scale commercialization until the 2030s.

Japan, whose global solar panel production has plummeted from 50% in 2004 to under 1% today due to competition from subsidized Chinese manufacturers, intends to develop and export perovskite solar cells as a cornerstone of its renewable energy strategy.
