VLC Player Debuts Real-Time AI Subtitling

The VLC media player, showcased at CES 2025, introduced real-time, offline AI-generated subtitles and translations using open-source models. Jean-Baptiste Kempf, VideoLAN president, demonstrated the feature, which supports over 100 languages and operates locally without cloud services.

Unlike previous plug-ins utilizing OpenAI’s Whisper, this capability is integrated directly into VLC. While no release date was announced, the feature marks a significant milestone. VideoLAN also celebrated surpassing 6 billion downloads, with Kempf noting VLC’s growing user base despite the rise of streaming services.
