Biden Signs Bill Potentially Banning TikTok
President Joe Biden signed a foreign aid package containing a bill that requires TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to divest the app within a year, or face a ban. The law gives ByteDance nine months to arrange a deal, extendable by three months if progress is seen. Originally thought to stall in the Senate, the bill passed after being bundled with foreign aid to US allies.
TikTok plans to challenge the law in court, potentially delaying enforcement. Questions remain about China’s response and whether ByteDance can sell TikTok and its algorithm. TikTok’s CEO criticized the ban, arguing it silences voices.
