Israel Prepares $1.2 Billion Unstoppable Laser

On April 13, 2024, Iran launched an unprecedented nighttime attack on Israel, deploying over 300 drones and missiles. Simultaneously, Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel Defense Forces positions in the Golan Heights. Israel responded with its multi-layered air-defense systems, including Arrow 3 interceptors for ballistic missiles, David’s Sling missiles for lower altitude threats, and the Iron Dome for short-range threats. The U.S. military also assisted by shooting down some attackers. Despite this robust defense, nine Iranian missiles struck Nevatim and Ramon Airbases, injuring one person.

The attack aimed to overwhelm Israeli defenses and exhaust their interceptor stocks. To address this, Israel plans to deploy Iron Beam, a high-power laser system capable of intercepting missiles, rockets, and drones. Funded partially by a $1.2 billion U.S. aid package, Iron Beam offers a cost-effective and theoretically unlimited defense option, potentially reducing collateral damage compared to traditional interceptors. Successful deployment of Iron Beam could provide Israel with a nearly invincible defense and set a precedent for similar American laser defense systems, offering a significant leap in military technology.
