Makita Creates Portable Rechargeable Microwave

Japanese power tool manufacturer Makita has developed a portable and rechargeable microwave that can be used at work, at home, while traveling, camping, or in remote areas where a source of electricity may not be available. The cordless microwave is equipped with 40-volt batteries at the back of the appliance and can operate even if only a single battery pack is used, while the other can be used as a backup. The appliance resembles a vintage FM radio stereo or a toolbox, and comes with a single top handle and a dedicated USB slot for charging electronic devices with a max output of 2.4A charging. The operating panel is easy to use and mainly relies on play-and-pause functions.

The portable and rechargeable microwave also features an option to switch from 500W to 350W in terms of the power output to ensure that the batteries do not quickly drain. It can accommodate large lunch and bento boxes with its 8-liter capacity, and the flat, square plate inside the microwave can be cleaned easily by wiping off any spills with a moist cloth. A sponge filter nestled in the grill below can be cleaned using a vacuum once it has collected enough dirt and dust.

Makita claims that once two battery packs are inserted in the dedicated slots at the rear, the machine can reheat around 11 lunch boxes and 20 200-ml cups of drinks. The appliance may come with shoulder straps, making it easier to carry the lightweight microwave over the shoulder. However, the microwave must be placed on a flat surface to work correctly.

To remind forgetful users to take their newly warmed-up lunch, the appliance beeps every minute after reheating the food. The Makita portable and rechargeable microwave is currently available only in Japan and retails for 110,000 yen (around 825 USD) excluding tax, battery, and charger.
