The Portal: Uniting New York City and Dublin Through Art and Technology
A groundbreaking public sculpture known as “The Portal” debuted on May 8, 2024, forming a visual link between New York City and Dublin. Conceived as a symbol of unity transcending physical boundaries, “The Portal” offers a real-time, visual live stream connecting the two iconic cities. In New York City, it is installed at the Flatiron South Public Plaza, while in Dublin, it faces O’Connell Street capturing views of the GPO building and the Spire.
Founded by artist Benediktas Gylys, Portals aim to foster connections between people across borders and cultures. The project, facilitated by collaborative efforts, symbolizes Dublin’s commitment to global connectivity as the European Capital of Smart Tourism 2024. With support from various organizations, “The Portal” serves as a captivating attraction, fostering human connection and unity between New Yorkers and Dubliners until fall 2024.
