Windows Finally Supports RAR Files After 28 Years
Microsoft has announced that Windows 11 will natively support various archive formats, including RAR, tar, 7-zip, and gz. This update will eliminate the need for third-party apps to access these file formats on Windows. The support for these formats will be rolled out in a work-in-progress build later this week, and a September update will provide compatibility for opening these archives. Microsoft also plans to enable support for creating files in these formats by 2024. This integration aims to enhance the performance of archive functionality during compression on Windows 11.
