AI Increases Breast Cancer Detection Rates

A real-world study has demonstrated that using artificial intelligence (AI) in breast cancer screening improves detection rates without increasing false positives. Researchers analyzed data from 461,818 women in Germany, where AI-supported screening was implemented in a nationwide program. AI flagged suspicious scans for further review, increasing cancer detection rates by 17.6%—identifying one additional case per 1,000 women screened—while maintaining a similar recall rate for further investigation.

The AI tool’s “safety net” identified 3,959 potential misses, leading to 204 cancer diagnoses. It also improved radiologists’ efficiency and could reduce their workload. Experts welcomed the findings, noting potential benefits for healthcare systems facing radiologist shortages, like the NHS. However, concerns about overdiagnosis and the need for long-term follow-up were raised to ensure clinically meaningful outcomes. Researchers emphasized cautious and supervised implementation of AI to maximize benefits and mitigate risks.
