AI Predicts Earthquakes a Week in Advance
Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin developed an AI that successfully predicted 70% of earthquakes during a seven-month trial in China. The AI was trained on five years of seismic data and detected statistical anomalies to forecast earthquakes a week in advance. It correctly predicted 14 earthquakes within 200 miles of their occurrence and missed only one, though it did issue eight false warnings.
While the method’s effectiveness in other locations remains untested, this breakthrough suggests that AI-driven earthquake prediction could one day enhance global preparedness and mitigate the impact on lives and economies.
