Bjoern Woltermann of Katalyst
An exclusive Tech Tribune Q&A with Bjoern Woltermann (founder and CEO) of Katalyst, which was honored in our:
Tell us the origin story of Katalyst – what problem were you trying to solve and why?
I was introduced to full-body EMS in 2012 at the recommendation of my doctor. Like many people, I suffered from chronic back pain and demanding travel. After six weeks, I was pain-free, visibly stronger, and inspired to help people discover EMS. At that time, however, EMS devices were cost-prohibitive, cumbersome, and required a specialized trainer to operate.
This initial experience inspired me to found Katalyst with the goal of making EMS technology accessible for home use, thus helping others improve their strength and fitness conveniently.
Central to our mission is the notion that fitness should be effective, efficient, and accessible. With advanced features such as real-time sensorial monitoring and customizable stimulation targeting multiple muscle groups, Katalyst empowers users to optimize their fitness journey while mitigating injury risks with zero impact on joints while also allowing individuals with limitations due to injuries or pre-existing conditions to achieve the benefits of strength training.
What was the biggest hurdle you encountered in your journey?
One of our biggest hurdles was securing FDA clearance and developing the complex technology needed to make EMS training accessible for home use. Achieving this milestone was a defining moment that underscored our commitment to quality and innovation. Additionally, we also faced supply chain challenges due to the global chip shortage during the pandemic, which impacted production timelines. By building strategic partnerships, we ultimately secured the necessary components to meet demand and deliver our product to customers.
What does the future hold for Crisp?
The future for Katalyst is about redefining fitness with cutting-edge EMS technology, now elevated by the recent release of the Gen4 Suit. Building on the success of Gen3, the Gen4 Suit offers a more precise fit, enhanced durability, and greater convenience, catering to a wider range of users and supporting a seamless training experience. Katalyst remains dedicated to empowering customers to boost strength, improve metabolic health, and accelerate injury recovery through EMS training. By enhancing the user experience and expanding its reach, Katalyst continues its mission to make fitness more accessible and effective for everyone
