Interviews

Derek Morgan of Ovation

An exclusive Tech Tribune Q&A with Derek Morgan (co-founder and Head of Product) of Ovation, which was honored in our:
Tell us the origin story of Ovation – what problem were you trying to solve and why?

Ovation, like many startups, had humble beginnings. Our first office was a karaoke bar where we would work during the day before patrons sang their hearts out to “Don’t Stop Believin'” at night. From there, we “graduated” to Zack’s basement. We were passionate about the industry we were in because traditionally the restaurant industry has been underserved. We envisioned a world where customers and businesses could interact with more trust and loyalty. Fast-forward to today and Ovation puts food on the table for dozens of families and is helping to make the world we envisioned a reality.

What was the biggest hurdle you encountered in your journey?

In the early days of Ovation, it was easy to get pulled in many different directions by customers willing to open their checkbooks. However, when you try to be everything to everyone, you simultaneously become nothing to everyone. We found ourselves being pretty good at many things, but we realized we needed to be GREAT at a few things. Once we nailed those things down, the business really took off.

What does the future hold for Ovation?

The future at Ovation is so bright that sometimes I feel like I should be wearing sunglasses at work. We are doubling down on what our customers love and building increasingly more innovative features. This has led us to be the best feedback solution for restaurants on the market.

What are your thoughts on the local tech startup scene in Orem?

Utah in general has provided so many beautiful opportunities for tech startups to thrive. This vibrant startup scene has sparked an interest and passion for working with startups. In turn, we have been able to hire smart, fun, and ambitious individuals to help us build Ovation.

What’s your best advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?

My advice for those who think they are interested in entrepreneurship would be:

  • Consider working in an early stage startup. This will allow you to learn so much without taking on all of the risk yourself.
  • Get involved in the community and meet people who are also passionate about entrepreneurship – their passion is infectious!
  • Look everywhere for good opportunities. When they come, take them and they will continue to lead to more.
