iFixit Gives iPhone 16 a 7/10 Repair Score
The teardown of Apple’s iPhone 16 highlights three major improvements for repairs. First, a new electrically-debonding adhesive on the vanilla and Plus models simplifies battery replacement. Second, the 16 Pro features a hard steel-cased battery for safer repairs, though the flagship 16 Pro Max lacks battery upgrades. Third, Apple has expanded its dual-entry design, allowing access from both the front and back, streamlining repairs.
Apple’s “Repair Assistant” tool now facilitates seamless pairing and calibration of replacement parts, removing software barriers for repairs. The iPhone 16’s battery adhesive can be safely detached using an electrical current, reducing the risk of damage from older brittle adhesive strips. Although the iPhone 16 requires specific tools for repair, such as a 9V battery for detaching adhesive, this process is inexpensive and accessible.
While the new design makes it easier to access components, challenges remain, including specialized screws and adhesive that requires heat for entry. Still, the overall design is more repair-friendly, earning the iPhone 16 a score of 7 out of 10, a significant improvement over previous models.
