Nintendo Switch Successor Rumored to Feature 8-Inch LCD Screen and Enhanced Hardware
The upcoming successor to Nintendo’s Switch is rumored to feature an 8-inch LCD screen, according to Omdia analyst Hiroshi Hayase. This would position the device at the upper end of portable gaming screens, with only a few recent devices surpassing the 7-inch barrier for gaming handhelds. The Switch 2’s potential larger screen size might require an increase in the console’s physical footprint. While the Switch OLED increased its screen size by reducing the bezel thickness, an 8-inch screen on the Switch 2 could necessitate a wider console.
The choice of an LCD screen over OLED might disappoint users accustomed to the enhanced colors and contrast of the Switch OLED. However, OLED screens are more expensive to produce, and Nintendo has historically prioritized cost-effectiveness in its hardware. Reports also suggest the new console may support modern graphical effects like ray tracing and DLSS, and may include a cartridge slot for physical media, with unclear details on backward compatibility with current Switch games.
