NY Reaches 6 Gigawatts of Solar Power a Year Ahead of Time

New York has reached 6 GW of installed solar capacity a year ahead of schedule, meeting a key goal in its Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. This milestone, providing enough electricity for one million homes, has attracted $9.2 billion in private investment and created 14,000 jobs. The project that brought New York over the 6 GW mark, developed by New Leaf Energy and owned by Generate Capital, supports low-income households through the Solar for All program with National Grid.

New York leads the nation in community solar capacity, enabling access to solar energy for renters and low-income residents. In 2023, the state had its best year for solar installations, adding 885 MW. Leaders highlight the success of New York’s solar strategy as a model for equitable energy transitions and aim for 10 GW as the next target. Solar projects have lowered electricity costs, provided tax revenue, and contributed to job growth across the state.
