Ukrainian ‘Phantom Skin’ Invisibility Cloak Defends Against Russian Drones
An anonymous Ukrainian material scientist has developed an “invisibility cloak” known as “Phantom Skin” to protect Ukrainians from Russian drones. This cloak is made of black plasticized material with a texture resembling a camping tarp. It conceals heat signatures emitted by humans or military equipment, rendering them invisible to infrared or thermal sensors. Soldiers can use it to evade detection by drone sensors, offering a significant advantage in the ongoing conflict.
The composition of Phantom Skin is undisclosed, but it contains nanotechnology compounds like graphene, which can mask or absorb heat signatures. The Ukrainian military tech company Spets Techno Expert (STE) assisted in its development, and it has been used to shield wounded soldiers from night vision cameras on drones. While STE has not disclosed orders for Phantom Skin, its tactical utility makes it likely to attract international interest. The conflict with Russia has spurred innovation in the Ukrainian defense sector, with military technologies gaining attention on the global market.
