“Undressing” Websites Sued for Deepfakes
The San Francisco City Attorney’s office is suing 16 popular websites that use AI to “undress” women and girls, aiming to shut them down. The lawsuit, spearheaded by Chief Deputy City Attorney Yvonne Meré, was inspired by reports of boys using these apps to create deepfake pornography of their female classmates. The sites, visited 200 million times in early 2024, use AI models trained on real pornography and child abuse images.
The suit argues that these sites violate various state and federal laws, including those against revenge and child pornography. The rise of AI-generated deepfakes has led to increased calls for legal action, including a proposed bipartisan bill, the NO FAKES Act, which would hold entities accountable for creating or distributing non-consensual AI-generated content.
