Watch Duty App Proves Crucial For Wildfire Updates
Residents of Los Angeles are increasingly turning to Watch Duty, a nonprofit-run wildfire tracking app, as catastrophic fires fueled by dry conditions and strong winds force evacuations and claim lives. The app, launched in 2021 and operating in 22 states, provides real-time, vetted updates about wildfires and firefighting efforts. Staffed by over 200 volunteers, including firefighters and emergency responders, Watch Duty prioritizes accurate, official information over speed, countering misinformation often spread during disasters.
Amid the Los Angeles fires, which have displaced over 80,000 people and caused two fatalities, the app has surged to the top of the Apple App Store with over 500,000 downloads in 12 hours. Its map-based interface displays fire locations, evacuation routes, and updates, offering a centralized source of critical information. The app is widely used by first responders, pilots, and firefighters, ensuring it meets the needs of those on the front lines.
Funded by donations and subscriptions to its enhanced version, Watch Duty remains free to use and does not sell user data. With $5.6 million in 2024 funding, the app continues its mission to serve communities during climate-related disasters, emphasizing accessibility and reliability over profit.
