First PC Emulator for iOS Revealed
Apple has approved UTM SE, an emulator app for running classic software and games, after initially rejecting it and preventing its notarization in the EU. The app is now freely available for iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS.
Following the June rejection, the developer had considered abandoning the project due to it being a “subpar experience.” However, UTM has now acknowledged the support of the AltStore team and another developer whose QEMU TCTI implementation was essential for the JIT-less version.
UTM SE, like other App Store emulators, doesn’t include operating systems but provides links to guides and downloads for emulating Windows XP to Windows 11 and pre-built Linux virtual machines. Mac OS 9.2.1 and DOS are also referenced in the App Store listing.
The app description highlights UTM SE’s capabilities:
– Runs classic software and games
– Supports VGA and terminal modes
– Emulates x86, PPC, and RISC-V architectures
– Allows running pre-built machines or creating custom configurations
– Built on the QEMU emulator
