Toshiba Unveils Cobalt-Free Lithium-Ion Battery with Rapid Charging
Toshiba has revealed the development of a cobalt-free lithium-ion battery, featuring a niobium-titanium oxide (NTO) anode. The battery demonstrates high thermal stability and ultra-fast recharging, achieving an 80% charge in just 5 minutes during tests.
Toshiba conducted evaluations using a prototype 1.5 Ah pouch battery, observing a high voltage of 3V or more and over 80% capacity retention after 6,000 cycles at 60°C. Although the technology shows promise, Toshiba acknowledges the need for further development, aiming for larger capacities of 50 Ah or 100 Ah for automotive use. The company anticipates commercial availability by 2028.
