Charles Carriere of Scandy

An exclusive Tech Tribune Q&A with Charles Carriere, the founder and president of Scandy, which was honored in our:
Tell us the origin story of Scandy – what problem were you trying to solve and why?

Scandy was created to be an easy way to capture a 3D scan and get it 3D printed in a single application. Along the way, we pivoted to become a pure 3D scanning company, without the 3D printing integration.

What was the biggest hurdle you encountered in your journey?

The biggest hurdle we had was waiting for the market to come to us. We developed for 2 platforms (Intel’s RealSense and Google’s Tango) that didn’t scale the way we expected. Once the iPhone X was announced with the TrueDepth sensor, we finally had confidence that there was a total addressable market that was worth building for.

What does the future hold for Scandy?

We believe the future is in 3D. We believe in 3D for everyone, so we will improve our apps and look to participate in emerging platforms like AR and VR. . We’re working on volumetric video capture to easily create holograms on your phone.

What are your thoughts on the local tech startup scene in New Orleans?

Because NOLA isn’t thought of as a startup hub, young companies here need to be scrappier. There isn’t likely to be a lot of funding to get to first revenue, so startups need to find ways to demonstrate traction before they fundraise.

What’s your best advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?

Just get started. Think product validation first. Then fundraise.
